Why the "U" shape?
It works for me. I've tried different ones. You do the same until you find the one that works best for YOU.

Can't get Your Icons to move? They jump right back.
Easy fix!! Right click your mouse on your desktop in a blank space, (somewhere where there are no icons).

You will see a little "dropdown" list at right. Go to "Arrange Icons" You'll see another list by Name by Type by Size by Date Auto Arrange There is a check by Auto Arrange, UnCheck it!! Then You'll be able to "drag & drop" them wherever you want.

Warning:
If you lock up your pc, you may have to put them all back. I do it. Your decision. {smiles}

Below is Your Control Panel where you change the way your Desktop looks

If you "Double Click" on "Display", You will be able to change the look of Your Desktop, Like Colors, or pictures, or backgrounds, size, ScreenSaver, etc.

So, click on the screen below now
